Jan Gray:
It's extremely difficult to convert old legacy serial code into parallel code with multicores. Many of these programs have millions of lines of code and converting them to parallelism is a very hard problem!

Do you believe in the power of technology to change the world??

Ray Kurzweil gave the most inspiring presentation today at singularityu his "The Singularity is Nearer" presentation included the spiritual conceptualization of love.
Just experienced "Survivor" singularityu style, complete with team building exercises, the primary difference being you vote people in. Fun experiment even more so if I had a few more ZZZs :)
I'm starting to lose a little patience after hour 5-6 of the iPhone 4.0 upgrade process, maybe I've got to many apps, or maybe apple needs to rethink their architecture strategy? Oh well hopefully this is only an annual event!
Simply awesome buzzzz....

I had approximately three conversations with Larry Page and Ray Kurzweil tonight. I can't believe this place . . .

singularityu Dan Barry what can you do to make this happen? Ignore all the years of rejection. Keep trying. Force your dream to continue!!
singularityu Ray Kurzweil work backworks on what you want to do and make it happen.
Totally awesome change the world video at singularityu opening ceremony
I'm about to prep a 23andme DNA sample, shake Ray Kurzweil's hand, prep for a photo shoot with classmates, and enjoy a keynote from an unknown speaker. Meanwhile Peter D. is talking to the white house for some unknown reason, I have my guesses =)

Day 1: Sleepless University - Yes it really is on Akron Rd. :)

So it's 1:30AM and I guess I should just goto sleep, but only because everyone else decided we should.  It's only day one and I've already met, and had some amazing conversations.  Conversations about how Bob Harris and Peter D. started international space university and then as a result singularity university.  Conversations about what the difference between machine learning and artificial intelligence is.  Conversations about good vs bad AI, and what's likely to work best.  Conversations about what it's like to be mentored and receive several rounds of funding from Kleiner Perkins, and work with Vinod Khosla.  Conversations about how messed up the venture capital is.  Conversations about the future of energy and transportation.  Conversations about what it's like to live in ethopia.  3D printing of several objects from auto-cad.  I'd love to write more but it's already 1:41 and I need sleep at some point. . .  Good night everyone!

The Singularity Summer

This is a blog about the graduate studies program at Singularity University for the summer of 2010. It is written from the prospective of a rather open student who believes that sharing is vital to everything.
